New attraction in the harbour town of Lüderitz: the Namibia Maritime Museum has now opened its doors to visitors. President Nangolo Mbumba had officially opened it in September (see report by Namibian.org).

The Maritime Museum is located in the renovated and remodelled building of the former power station. Old maps, ship models, navigation instruments and many other exhibits tell exciting stories from the history of seafaring off the coast of Namibia.

You can also learn a lot about the area's present. For example, about the sea and coastal inhabitants. Or about fishing, diamond mining on the seabed and the development of oil and gas deposits under the sea.

The Maritime Museum is open Monday to Friday from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm, Saturdays and public holidays from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm. It is closed on Sundays. With 2,500 square metres of space spread over five ‘decks’ (floors), it is the largest museum of its kind in the whole of Africa.
