The right hand in front of the body, thumb spread, index finger bent, the remaining three fingers pressed together and pointing straight down. Anyone strolling through Warsaw or Prague wearing a Namibia T-shirt should not be surprised if they are greeted with this gesture and a wink.
This is because the hand in the shape of the country, with the thumb as the strip of the Zambezi region, is the distinctive greeting of Namibians and Namibia fans. And the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) 'taught' this greeting to travel experts during a roadshow through four cities in Central and Eastern Europe.
The roadshow visited Budapest, Bucharest, Warsaw and Prague, capitals of countries where there is growing interest in long-distance travel. The aim was to present Namibia as a travel destination and to establish contacts in the travel industry.
Seven tourism companies from Namibia presented extraordinary Namibian travel experiences. The NTB's European Director, Matthias Lemcke, gave a positive assessment on his LinkedIn page.
Over 200 local tour operators, travel agencies and other influential players in the local travel markets took part. The roadshow was another step towards expanding Namibia's presence in high-potential markets.
The accessibility of the destination is always an important factor. Discover Airlines provides good flight connections with changeovers in Frankfurt or Munich, and Ethiopian Airlines offers connections with a stopover in Addis Ababa.
