Hecate Dropwing

(Trithemis hecate)

Hecate Dropwings occur mainly at sections of swampy rivers and oshanas.

Hecate Dropwing

Introduction: Hecate Dropwings (Trithemis hecate) occur mainly at sections of swampy rivers and oshanas. There is also a large population habituating a spring-fed reservoir in the Otavi Mountains. Hekate is the Greek Goddess of Magic and the Dead.

Distribution: Widespread in the north of the country, Kwando and Kavango River systems, Tsumkwe, Tsaobis and the Von Bach Dam near Okahandja.

Colouration: Black appearance with only small yellow streaks on the abdomen. Males have a very dark blue pruinosity with a purplish-blue frons.

Breeding: Males fly along the vegetation of the water's edge in search of females.

Flight season: November to June.

Conservation: Not threatened.
