Bold Leaftail

(Phyllogomphus selysii)

Bold Leaftails were named after a Belgian founder of odonatology, Baron Michel Edmond de Selys-Longchamps.

Introduction: Bold Leaftails (Phyllogomphus selysii) were named after a Belgian founder of odonatology, Baron Michel Edmond de Selys-Longchamps (1813-1900). The difficulty is obtaining knowledge and information on this species can be put down to their presumed activity at dawn and possibly at night. Days are spent in treetops.

Distribution: Ruacana Falls, Kavango River, Bwabwata National Park and the Kwando River.

Colouration: Dark coloured with a dark brown to black body. Other markings include yellow spots on the base of S2-7 and 3 greenish-yellow bands on the thorax. The eyes are green.

Breeding: Larvae has been found in sandy to muddy substrates of slow-moving rivers.

Flight season: Occurs throughout most of the rainy season.

Max size: A large and robust species.

Conservation: Not threatened.
