Coal
Introduction: Although coal is present in Namibia, there are no operating coal mines in the country. Coal develops from peat, a substance that is formed from dead plants. The peat then becomes buried. Once underground it is subjected to enormous pressure for thousands or millions of years. Eventually the peat turns into coal, a combustible sedimentary rock.
Distribution: Coal deposits are found (deeply buried) in the Aranos coalfield. Deposits are also found in Ovamboland, Waterberg and Toscanini areas.
Composition: Different plant materials such as vitrinite, exinite and inertinite.
Colouration: Black or brown rock.
Uses: An energy and fuel source.
