Pyrite

Its distinctive colour has earned pyrite the nickname, 'fool's gold'.

Introduction: The most common habit of pyrite is in small cubic crystals. Their distinctive brassy gold colour has earned pyrite the well-known nickname of 'fool's gold'.

Distribution: Abundant at the Matchless Mine and Gorob Deposits. Also mined at the Otjihase Mine.

Composition: Sulphide

Crystal system: Cubic

Lustre: Metallic

Streak: Green-black

Hardness: 6-6.5
