Gypsum

Gypsum is found in dry regions in the country.

Gypsum

Introduction: Gypsum is found in dry regions in the country. Its main use in the construction industry is in the manufacture of builders' plaster. The Greek word gypsos means plaster.

Distribution: The Tsumeb Mine and Rosh Pinah. On the west coast of Namibia from Luderitz to north of Walvis Bay, green or tan-coloured 'desert roses' can be found close to the beach.

Composition: Sulphate

Crystal system: Monoclinic

Lustre: Pearly, vitreous

Streak: White

Hardness: 2
