Epidote

Usually found as light green to dark black-green crystals.

Epidote

Introduction: Epidote is a Greek word for 'epidosis' meaning to 'increase', referring indirectly to the fact that one plane of an epidote crystal has one side longer than the other. They are usually found as light green to dark black-green crystals.

Distribution: Naugas in the Gamsberg Region of the Rehoboth District. Also found west of Brandberg, in the Tafelkop amethyst deposits.

Composition: Silicate

Crystal system: Monoclinic

Lustre: Vitreous

Streak: White, grey

Hardness: 6-7
