Chalcocite

Chalcocite is a leading copper-bearing mineral.

Chalcocite

Introduction: Chalcocite is a leading copper-bearing mineral, which usually bears steel-grey, twinned crystals. Chalkos is the Greek meaning for 'copper'.

Distribution: Tsumeb Mine, Kombat Mine and Tschudi Mines. Chalcocite is also found in Damaraland, the Henderson Mine in the Karibib Region and the Oamites Mine, 50km south of Windhoek.

Composition: Sulphide

Crystal system: Monoclinic

Lustre: Metallic

Streak: Grey, black

Hardness: 2.5-3
