Introduction: This is one of the most common minerals in the world and is named from the Latin word calx which means 'lime'. It is usually one of the main components of limestones and marbles. Calcite is present in a number of other metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.
Distribution: Occurs in many Namibian locations including the farms Hardap 110, Narris 111 and Dabib 112 in the Mariental District. It has also been found in basalt in the Rehoboth District and at the now defunct Matchless mine.
