Bismuth

Introduction: Bismutum is a Latinized word from the German meaning of white mass or 'wismat', coined by Basil Valentine in the 15th Century. It forms massive lumps or unclear crystals and is processed for consumer use by the pharmaceutical industry.

Distribution: Karibib-Usakos region pegmatites, present in the Tanalite Valley. North-east of the Erongo Mountains in the Krantzberg Mine is another producer of bismuth crystals. Specimens have also be found at the farm Okarundu North West 118 in the Omaruru District.

Composition: Native element

Crystal system: Hexagonal

Lustre: Metallic

Streak: Silver-white

Hardness: 2-2.5
