Arsenopyrite

Arsenopyrite is a fairly common mineral in Namibia.

Arsenopyrite

Introduction: Arsenopyrite is a fairly common mineral in Namibia found with base metal and gold deposits. Garlic lovers will enjoy the smell because of the rather pungent aroma given off when struck a slight blow with a hammer. As it is closely related to copper and iron sulphides, this can become a very useful distinguishing feature. Other important features include its glittering effect and for its composition, arsenic.

Distribution: Krantzberg Mine in the Erongo Mountains, Kombat, Matchless, Haib and Otjihase Mines.

Composition: Sulphide

Crystal system: Monoclinic

Lustre: Metallic

Streak: Black

Hardness: 5.5-6
