Anhydrite

Its name comes from the apparent lack of water in this mineral.

Anhydrite

Introduction: The apparent absence of water in this mineral gave rise to its Greek name; 'an' meaning 'without' and hydro for 'water'.

Distribution: Minute crystals were found in the Tsumeb Mine.

Composition: Sulphate.

Crystal system: Orthorhombic.

Lustre: Pearly, greasy.

Streak: White, grey-white.

Hardness: 3.5.
