Quartzite

Quartzite ranks as one of the hardest rocks.

Quartzite

Introduction: Quartzite ranks as one of the hardest rocks. Quartz sandstone recrystallizes when heat and pressure are applied, forming new mineral grains.

Distribution: Quartzite outcrops occur in the Windhoek District and are reasonably abundant in the Nama sedimentary succession.

Composition: Mainly recrystallized quartz. Very few other minerals are present.

Colouration: White, grey, pink and buff.

Uses: Some samples of quartzite can be used as floor tiles.
