Introduction: Some of the oldest rocks in Namibia, over 3,000 million years old, are granites. It is a coarse-grained igneous rock formed from the crystallization of molten magma rich in silica. Layers of granite rock weather by exfoliation, which leaves hills and koppies with an enormous rounded boulders effect.
Distribution: Granite deposits include Spitzkoppe, Karibib, Okahandja, Walvis Bay-Swakopmund-Rossing and Luderitz regions.
Composition: Mainly quartz, feldspars, mica and hornblende.
Colouration: Varies from pink-red to colourless and white.
Uses: Construction.
