Slangeierbos

Slangeierbos (Maerua juncea): The plains of central to north-central Namibia are the main habitats of this thick, multi-stemmed, semi-deciduous climber or shrub. It also grows in Damaraland and in the Tsumkwe region. Features include hairless dark-green leaves, green bark and branchlets and flowers with white marginal petals that bloom from August to January. Near-cylindrical fruits are covered by a tough skin. Fruits develop into a yellow-brown colour when ripe.

Visitors to the region can witness this plant being one of the first Namibian shrubs to flower in spring. The Himba people believe if the branches are burnt during flooding then the rains will cease. Many species of animals eat the leaves and the fruit can be eaten. Some species of butterfly such as the Small Orange Tip and Smokey Orange Tip are attracted to this plant.
