The window plant is endemic to the southern Namib Desert.

Window plant

The window plant (Fenestraria rhopalophylla) is endemic to the southern Namib Desert. It grows mainly in a sandy plain habitat, although it can occasionally be found on gravel plains. The particular species of Fenestraria, yields beautiful large white flowers and are produced during the winter months.

Most of the window plant's body is submerged in the sand with only the tip of the leaves on view. The name comes from the clear window that remains between the leaves and the ground.

Fenestraria rhopalophylla is a protected species on Namibia's red list and is classed as vulnerable.
