Red Yygie (Lampranthus coccineus) belong to the subfamily Mesembryanthemaceae. They are confined to the southern regions of the country, namely the Sperrgebiet in the Namib Desert south of Luderitz and the Fish River Canyon. Their bright-red shiny 'vygie' flowers only open on bright sunny days.
This is an ideal plant to create ground cover on a steep bank or rockery. Beautiful flowers bloom in the springtime when they attract insects and butterflies. They require sunshine and are frost and drought resistant.
