Aloe pillansii

Aloe pillansii

This is the largest species of aloe found in Namibia, growing up to 13m high. They are an extremely rare plant, with only 7 known locations in the country, all north of the Orange River. Their yellow flowers are similar to those of A. ramosissima and Aloe dichotoma (or the quiver tree) but the inflorescence always hangs down with the lower leaves then turning upwards. Branching of the trunk, also known as 'forking' is fairly high. Branches always grow from these 'forking' positions.

Flowers bloom from September to October. There is a similarity between A. pillansii and A. dichotoma, but Quiver Trees have thicker trunks, multi-branched and are far more widespread in their distribution range. Extreme weather conditions may affect A. dichotoma's appearance, hence the confusion.
