Red banded jellyfish
Introduction: Red-banded jellyfish (Chrysaora hysoscella) are an abundant species in the colder Namibian waters. Features include a more shallow bell than other species, which are armed with 24 long, hollow tentacles. Their preferred habitat is sheltered bays, where they congregate in huge numbers. A shrimp-like animal with large eyes called a commensal hyperiid amphipod often live embedded in their tissues.
Distribution: Throughout Namibian waters including Möwe Bay, Terrace Bay, Torra Bay, Henties Bay, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay and Luderitz.
Diet: Feeds on larger planktonic animals including fish larvae, anchovy and pilchard.
Colouration: The top of the bell is marked wit dark purple-red radiating bands, hence the name.
