It resembles an 'upturned shape' carrying a small 'pocket'.

Pocket amphipod

Introduction: One of the abdominal segments of the pocket amphipod (Amaryllis macrophthalma) resembles an 'upturned shape' carrying a small 'pocket' above the corner, hence the common name.

Distribution: From the Kunene River mouth to Möwe Bay, Jakkalsputz, Wlozkasbaken, Swakopmund, Sandwich Harbour to Luderitz.

Diet: Feeds on small floating food particles or carrion

Colouration: Brown with blue side plates

Breeding: Eggs materialize from a brood pouch fully grown

Max size: 10mm
