Shabby sponge crab

Dromidia hisutissima
This crab carries a cloak of sponge or seaweed on its back.

Shabby sponge crab

Introduction: An outstanding shaggy coat of long, rigid brown hairs can only mean the shabby sponge crab (Dromidia hisutissima). This rather gruff looking crab also carries a cloak of sponge or seaweed on its back, although it seldom hides it completely.

Distribution: from Luderitz south to the mouth of the Orange River

Diet: minute sea food particles

Colouration: stiff brown hairs on a brown body

Breeding: eggs hatch into planktonic larvae

Max size: 40mm
