Nigerian free tailed bat

Mops nudicomis
The agile Nigerian Free-Tailed Bat is found in Nigeria's forests and is known for its distinctive tail and insect-based diet.

Nigerian free tailed bat

Introduction: The Nigerian Free-Tailed Bat, scientifically referred to as Mops nudicomis, is an intriguing species found in various regions of Africa, including Nigeria and beyond. As part of the free-tailed bat family, they are known for their unique tail structure that extends beyond the tail membrane, contributing to their swift and agile flight.

Distribution: Nigerian Free-Tailed Bats primarily inhabit the forested areas of Nigeria, where they can be found roosting in various locations such as crevices, caves, attics, and expansion joints in bridges. These bats are known to form colonies ranging from a few individuals to several hundred, often co-existing with other bat species, such as the Angola free-tailed bat.

Diet: Similar to many other bat species, the Nigerian Free-Tailed Bat sustains itself on a diet primarily composed of insects. They are adept at catching flying insects like mosquitoes, moths, and beetles, which they locate using their echolocation abilities.

Colouring: Nigerian Free-Tailed Bats have a distinct appearance, with a rich dark brown fur on their body and lighter underparts. Their throat exhibits a tawny colour, while their chest appears grey-brown, and their belly is whitish. The wings are uniformly brown.

Size: On average, these bats have a body length of approximately 100mm.

Weight: Nigerian Free-Tailed Bats weigh around 15 grams.
