Opistophthalmus opinatus

Introduction: The elongated sting is something to watch out for with Opistophthalmus opinatus. Although it is very painful, it is not life-threatening. Micro habitats are often in open ground, an ideal feature for them to excavate burrows down to 25cm.
Distribution: South-central Namibia ranging from Swakopmund across to Windhoek and down through Mariental and Keetmanshoop extending east to Ariamsvlei.
Diet: Locates prey by sensing vibrations through it's feet. Larger species will eat small reptiles and vertebrates, mammals and frogs if it can overpower them.
Colouration: Dark body and pincers with lighter flanks, legs and sting.
Breeding: Females do not produce eggs, embryos develop in a similar fashion as human embryos.
Maximum size: Variable size depending on location.
