Orthetrum brachiale
Strong Skimmers are also known as River Skimmers as they occur in all freshwater habitats including rivers, floodplains of larger rivers and other smaller water bodies such as dams, oshanas and other wetland impoundments.

Introduction: Strong Skimmers (Orthetrum brachiale) are also known as River Skimmers as they occur in all freshwater habitats including rivers, floodplains of larger rivers and other smaller water bodies such as dams, oshanas and other wetland impoundments.

Distribution: Kavango River and western Caprivi Strip, Palmwag, Waterberg and the Von Bach Dam near Okahandja, Damaraland and the Otavi Mountains.

Colouration: Greenish thorax, metallic green eyes, pale pterostigma.

Breeding: Females lay eggs by dropping to the surface water while in flight as the male stands guard.

Flight season: November to May.

Max size: 50mm.

Conservation: Not threatened.
