Blue cascader

Zygonyx natalensis
Blue Cascaders are sometimes mistaken for Skimmers when over water, although the latter do not patrol for extended periods.

Introduction: Blue Cascaders (Zygonyx natalensis) are sometimes mistaken for Skimmers when over water, although the latter do not patrol for extended periods.

Distribution: Epupa and Ruacana Falls, Popa Falls and the rapids at Katima Mulilo on the Zambezi River.

Colouration: Males have a grey-blue pruinosity when on waterfall/rapid patrol. Metallic-blue frons. Black abdomen with very thin yellow lateral streaks in younger males.

Breeding: Larvae live on wood and rocks or between leaves swirling in the swift current. Emergence takes place at overhanging rocks.

Flight season: Between December and April

Max size: 50mm.

Conservation: Not threatened.
