Scarlet tip

Colotis danae annae
Scarlet Tips inhabit savannah and thornveld. They are low fliers, speeding rapidly through open savannah, stopping to settle on flowers.

Introduction: Scarlet Tips (Colotis danae annae) inhabit savannah and thornveld. They are low fliers, speeding rapidly through open savannah, stopping to settle on flowers.

Distribution: Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip) , Kaokoland , Damaraland .

Breeding/Larval food: Leaves of some spp. of caper-bush (Capparaceae). Pupae taper at the tail in the form of a capsule, suspended by a silken girdle spun around the thorax.

Colouration: Sexually and seasonally dimorphic. The carmine-red apical patch changes to a pale yellowish-pink in the female with a yellowish ground colour.

On the wing: Throughout the year.

Wingspan: Male and female: 40 to 50mm.
