Introduction: The seasonal dimorphism of Gaudy Commodores (Junonia octavia sesamus) are so different, for many years they were considered to be 2 species. They hibernate under the banks of streams in the winter and in the summer they frequent hilltops where they 'dogfight' with other butterflies.
Distribution: Northern Namibia.
Breeding/Larval food: Dark grey caterpillars with spines on all segments on the body.
Colouration: The summer form has a red upperside with a broad black margin with a row of black spots on both wings. The winter form is is deep blue.
On the wing: Throughout the year.
Wingspan: Male: 50 to 58mm. Female: 55 to 60mm.
