Angolan happy

Chetia welwitschi
The Angolan Happy is a colourful and lively species commonly found in the rivers of northern Namibia.

Angolan happy

Introduction: The Angolan happy (Chetia welwitschi) is a small species of freshwater fish belonging to the family Cyprinidae. It is endemic to certain regions of southern Africa.

Distribution: The Angolan happy is native to Namibia, particularly in the northern regions, and other countries in southern Africa, including Angola and Zambia. It is often found in clear, fast-flowing streams and rivers with rocky substrates and dense vegetation.

Diet: The Angolan happy is an omnivorous fish with a varied diet. It primarily feeds on small aquatic insects, crustaceans, and plant matter, including algae. Its streamlined body allows it to maneuver effectively in the swift currents of its habitat while foraging for food.

colouration: The Angolan happy has a distinctive colour pattern with a silver-white body and a dark lateral stripe running along its sides. The dorsal fin may have a reddish or orange hue, adding to its visual appeal.

Breeding: Breeding behaviour of the Angolan happy is not extensively studied. During the breeding season, they are likely to find sheltered areas with abundant vegetation to lay their eggs. The eggs hatch without parental care, and the fry must fend for themselves.

Size: The Angolan happy is a small fish, with an average length of about 6 to 8 centimetres. Its compact size makes it well-adapted to the fast-flowing streams it inhabits.
