Australian gannet
Introduction: Australian gannets (Morus serrator) inhabit Cape Gannet colonies and coastal waters. Their behaviour in Namibia is believed to be similar, if not the same to the Cape gannet.
Distribution: Observed and recorded a number of times at Ichaboe Island.
Diet: Plunge-dives from 20m above the water for sardines and anchovies.
Description: Serrator is Latin for 'jagged or serrated' referring to the bill. Creamy white body, orange-buff wash on crown and hind neck with characteristic short, gular stripe around the throat.
Breeding: Breeds at islands and isolated Australian and New Zealand sites but has been observed building nests with associated breeding displays with Cape Gannets.
Size: 90cm.
