White bellied storm petrel
Introduction: White-bellied storm-petrels (Fregetta grallaria) seldom leave their preferred habitat of the oceanic waters near the continental shelf. Most observations confirm a general habit of flying low over the water, rocking from side to side, dragging their feet or belly on the water's surface.
Distribution: Rare observations near Luderitz.
Diet: Eats fish and squid, small crustaceans, offal and scraps.
Description: Fairly large seabird with short toes and 'spade-like' nails. Most birds of this species have a white rump and belly. Often trails legs in the water in flight. Grallaria is Latin for 'stilts' which refers to their long legs.
Breeding: Breeds in rocky crevices and island burrows.
Size: 20cm.
Weight: 60g.
Wingspan: 48cm.
