Allens gallinule

Allen's gallinule inhabit regions associated with freshwater marshes and reedbeds as well as dense vegetation with floating plants to walk on.

Introduction: Allen's gallinule (Porphyrio alleni) inhabit regions associated with freshwater marshes and reedbeds as well as dense vegetation with floating plants to walk on. They are good swimmers and divers.

Distribution: Caprivi, Windhoek.

Diet: Flowers, seeds of reeds, water lilies, grasses and bulbs and stems of water plants. Also takes fruits, earthworms, spiders, fish eggs and small fish.

Description: Bills are adapted to bite through heavy vegetation. Green, blue or purple plumage and brightly coloured legs with long toes for walking on floating vegetation.

Breeding: Between 2 and 8 eggs are laid in a shallow to deep cup made of reed stems, grasses and other water plants.

Size: 25cm.

Weight: 155g.
