The Eurasian hobby is also known as the hobby falcon and is related to the a buzzard.

Eurasian hobby

Introduction: The Eurasian hobby (Falco subbuteo) is also known as the hobby falcon and is related to the a buzzard. They inhabit open woodland or forest edges, at times foraging away from trees in open habitats including coastal dune fields and some mountain slopes.

Distribution: Absent from southern Namibia but found in Etosha National Park, Caprivi and northern parts of the Namib Desert.

Diet: Hunts mainly at dusk and early morning for locusts, dragonflies, beetles, small birds and bats. Often eats small insects on the wing and large numbers of queleas.

Description: Sleek and slender bird, long-winged when resting which reach the tip of a short, slightly tapered tail. Whitish forehead with a dark cap.

Breeding: Non-Namibian breeder.

Size: 35cm.

Weight: 230g.
