Introduction: Common redshanks (Tringa totanus) are palearctic breeders but can be found in Namibia year round in a variety of habitats such as sheltered bays and ports, as well as a number of inland water features.
Distribution: Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Etosha National Park, Caprivi.
Diet: Crustaceans, molluscs and worms.
Description: Totanus is the Latin name for a redshank. Features include a straight bill, a characteristic upright stance and fairly long legs. Tringa is the Greek phrase for 'a thrush-sized, white-rumped, tail-bobbling water-bird' as first mentioned by none other than Aristotle himself.
Breeding: Common redshanks breed out of Namibia.
