Roads along the Gariep (Orange) River passable again

Namibia travellers can once again use the direct route from Noordoewer to Rosh Pinah and Oranjemund. The closure of the DR 212 and MR 118 gravel roads has been lifted with immediate effect, according to Namibia's Roads Authority.

More than a fortnight ago, both roads had to be closed to traffic due to the flooding of the Gariep (Oranje) River (see our news story). To get from Noordoewer to Rosh Pinah one had to take a long detour via Keetmanshoop and Aus.

The flood wave of the Gariep (Oranje) River has passed the Ernest Oppenheimer Bridge near its mouth into the Atlantic Ocean. The roads on its banks are passable again.

Oranjemund, on the other hand, could only be reached from South Africa by means of the Ernest Oppenheimer Bridge, which crosses the Gariep River near its mouth into the Atlantic. The gravel road from Lüderitz to Oranjemund through the Tsau ǁKhaeb National Park was opened as a makeshift. However, it has not yet been completed.

It was the third time since mid-November that the Gariep River overflowed its banks and flooded stretches of the roads.
