WHO: Global health emergency because of Corona is over

Holidaymakers can now also take long-distance trips with even more peace of mind than before. The World Health Organisation (WHO) lifted the international health emergency it had declared more than a year ago because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus followed the recommendation of an expert panel. According to the panel, the threat has abated to such an extent that Corona is now only a permanent health problem (see United Nations News).

According to the WHO, more than 765 million COVID-infected people have been registered worldwide so far. Almost seven million officially fell victim to the pandemic. Including the unrecorded cases, the number of victims is probably around 20 million, Ghebreyesus explained.

Namibia already without Corona requirements since August 2022

The WHO decision is not binding. As before, each state takes its own measures against Corona or other diseases. In the US the requirement for entrants to show proof of Corona vaccination will expire on 11 May. That is in three days. In Germany, the last measures still in place ended on 7 April, including the requirement to wear a mask in doctors' offices.

Namibia is way ahead of the US and Germany. The last weekly briefing on the Corona situation by Health Minister Kalumbi Shangula took place in August 2022 (see our report). All requirements, including for travellers, were thus dropped.

Several airlines had already reintroduced Namibia as a destination in their flight schedules by then. Currently, there are ten direct flights per week from Frankfurt to Windhoek by the Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings Discover. In addition, there are five weekly connections by Ethiopean Airlines with a stopover in Addis Ababa and three by Qatar Airways via Doha. You can also get to Namibia via Johannesburg.
