Discover Airlines: Windhoek as hub for southern Africa

August 06, 2025

Namibia holidaymakers will be the first Discover Airlines passengers to board an A330 with a new livery and logo. This was announced by the Lufthansa subsidiary at the celebration of its new brand identity at Midgard, northeast of Windhoek. It was the first event to present the new design outside Germany.

The holiday airline thus underlined Namibia's contribution to its success since its establishment in July 2021. Discover Airlines currently flies ten times a week directly from Frankfurt to Windhoek. The route is one of the most successful connections of the airline, which until 5 September still officially operated under the name Eurowings Discover.

The design of the new brand identity in blue and yellow tones was presented in Germany two weeks days ago (see report by Namibian.org). The fleet's livery will not be renewed overnight, but over the course of the coming months. The same applies to the appearance of the cabin and the uniform accessories of the crews.

Revenue Manager Marco Götz also announced plans to make Hosea Kutako International Airport near Windhoek the airline's hub in southern Africa. Three of the weekly Namibia flights already continue to VicFalls in Zimbabwe. According to Götz, a code-sharing agreement with the private Namibian airline FlyNamibia is planned.

He pointed to the successful partnership between FlyNamibia and the private South African airline Airlink. Passengers from all over the world can thus book and reach FlyNamibia's domestic and regional destinations on one ticket and with favourable connections (see report by Namibian.org). Lufthansa had also announced a month ago that it had agreed on a code sharing with Airlink (see report by Engineering News).

More important for Namibia holidaymakers flying with Discover Airlines, however, may be Goetz's announcement that recently there are blankets available for guests in economy class as well. This was a frequently heard request from passengers.

In addition to its new brand identity, the young Lufthansa subsidiary celebrated its second birthday at Midgard. It had been presented for the first time on 15 July 2021 under the name Eurowings Discover. On 10 August 2021, the first aircraft landed at Hosea Kutako International Airport near Windhoek.
